THE MASTER SITS BACK

THE MASTER SITS BACK – Application 2 of 5

This is the name I give to the move between “Dragonfly Strikes Water” and “Swallow Returns to Nest”. It is used to neutralise the O’s thrust to your upper right quarter.

THE MASTER SITS BACK

You begin in contact with your blade on the left (as you are looking at him) of the O’s blade and, as he thrusts toward your chest or right shoulder, sit back into your left leg and turn a bit to your right keeping your blade between the O’s and yours. Keep your point aiming at the O. In this manner you are getting out of the way while maintaining defensive contact. The O must feel as if his thrust is going where he wants it to without obstacle. If any pressure is exerted on the O’s blade he will use it to change direction and cut you, and if your point does not constantly threaten him he may disengage to cut you. As he realizes his plight and withdraws you may have an opportunity to cut him.
